Calculus Tutoring
Who this is for
High-school students in AP Calculus AB or BC, and college students in the first-year sequence — including the large group taking it as a requirement for a major that is not mathematics.
Current scope. I tutor AP Calculus AB and BC, Calculus I, and Calculus II. I do not currently offer Calculus III or Linear Algebra tutoring.

What usually goes wrong
- Algebra, not calculus. A large share of lost points are algebra and trigonometry errors inside a correct calculus method. Diagnosing this correctly changes what we work on entirely.
- Word problems — related rates and optimization — where the calculus is easy and translating English into a diagram and an equation is the actual task.
- Knowing which integration technique applies. Students learn six techniques and then face an integral with no label on it.
- Series convergence, which is a decision procedure taught as a list of unrelated tests.
- Limits and continuity treated as a formality in week one, then quietly assumed all term.
Topics covered
Precalculus foundations, when the diagnosis calls for it — functions, transformations, trigonometric identities, exponentials and logarithms, and the algebra calculus assumes you already have.
Differential calculus — limits and continuity, the definition of the derivative, product, quotient and chain rules, implicit differentiation, related rates, linearization, extrema, the Mean Value Theorem, curve sketching, optimization, and L'Hôpital's rule.
Integral calculus — Riemann sums, both Fundamental Theorems, substitution, integration by parts, trigonometric integrals and substitution, partial fractions, improper integrals, area between curves, volumes by disks, washers and shells, arc length, and average value.
Sequences and series (BC / Calculus II) — convergence tests, alternating series, power series, Taylor and Maclaurin series, and radius and interval of convergence.
Parametric, polar, and vector-valued functions (BC / Calculus II).
Differential Equations — separable and linear first-order equations, integrating factors, second-order linear equations with constant coefficients, undetermined coefficients and variation of parameters, Laplace transforms, and applications. Intermediate tier.
How I teach calculus
First we find out which subject is actually broken. If the derivative is right and the simplification is wrong, more calculus practice will not help. That diagnosis is usually session one.
Every technique gets a trigger. Not "here are six integration techniques" but "here is what you look at in the integrand to decide". The goal is a decision procedure you can run under exam pressure without a worked example in front of you.
Graphs alongside algebra. A derivative is a slope and an integral is an accumulation. Students who hold both pictures make far fewer sign and bounds errors.
Setup gets checked before the work. For related rates and optimization we agree on the diagram, the variables, and the constraint before anyone differentiates.
I follow your course. AP AB, AP BC, and a college Calculus I differ in sequence and emphasis, and I read the syllabus before session one.
Who this is not a fit for
- Calculus III and multivariable calculus, and Linear Algebra — I do not offer either.
- Real analysis, proof-based mathematics, or graduate coursework.
- Statistics, including AP Statistics.
- Anyone wanting problem sets completed rather than taught.
Common questions
AP Calculus is college-level. Why is it the Foundational rate?

AB or BC — does it matter for tutoring?
Yes, for pacing and topic list. BC adds series, parametric, and polar. Tell me which when you get in touch.
My real problem might be algebra. Is that still your subject?
Yes, and it is common. Pre-Algebra through Precalculus are all subjects I tutor, so we can repair the foundation inside a calculus engagement instead of pretending the gap is not there.
Can you help with the AP exam specifically?
Yes — including the free-response format and the calculator / no-calculator split. I do not guarantee a score, and no honest tutor does.
