Students taking the ACT who struggle with the fast pace and dense data of the Science section, even if they are strong in their high school science classes.
Success depends much more on interpreting data, experiments, and scientific arguments than on memorizing advanced science content.

What usually goes wrong
- Reading the whole passage first. Wasting precious minutes reading dense experimental setups before knowing what the questions actually ask.
- Treating it like a biology test. Trying to remember facts from class instead of locating the explicit evidence provided in the charts.
- Getting lost in the variables. Becoming overwhelmed by complex acronyms and units that are entirely irrelevant to finding the correct answer.
- Running out of time. Failing to pace the 40 minutes across the passages effectively.
The approach
Categorizing Passage Types. We break down the section into its three forms: Data Representation, Research Summaries, and Conflicting Viewpoints, and apply a specific strategy to each.
Graph and Table Interpretation. Training the habit of immediately locating axes, keys, and trends before reading a single word of the text.
The Conflicting Viewpoints Strategy. Tackling the one passage that actually requires deep reading by comparing hypotheses side-by-side.
Timing and Triage. Establishing a rigid pacing approach and learning when to skip a time-sink question to secure three easier points elsewhere.
Who this is not a fit for
- Students looking for a magic trick to bypass reading entirely. The strategies are highly effective, but they require practice to execute quickly under pressure.
- Students preparing for the SAT. The digital SAT integrates data analysis into its math and reading sections, but does not have a dedicated, rapid-fire science section like this.
Common questions
Do I need to know a lot of science to do well?
No. While there are typically two to three questions per test that require outside knowledge (like knowing the freezing point of water or basic genetics), the vast majority of the section can be answered using only the information provided in the passage.
Is ACT Science still required?
No. The Science section is now optional and does not contribute to the ACT Composite score. Whether you should take it depends on your target colleges, intended programs, and whether a strong Science score helps your application.
How can I improve my speed?
By changing how you navigate the page. Going straight to the questions for Data Representation and Research Summaries passages prevents you from reading text you don't need. Speed comes from efficiency, not just reading faster.
